Wings over paradise: My birdwatching journey through Costa Rica

Costa Rica is renowned as one of the world’s top biodiversity hotspots, hosting an extraordinary variety of wildlife and ecosystems. The country is home to over 900 bird species. Its compact geography encompasses cloud forests, rainforests, mangroves, and coastal wetlands, each supporting unique communities of birds and other wildlife. This rich diversity is a result of Costa Rica’s position as a biological bridge between North and South America, allowing species from both continents to intermingle. Notably, Costa Rica contains nearly 5% of the world’s estimated species, despite occupying only 0.03% of Earth’s landmass. Birdwatchers and nature lovers flock to destinations such as Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve, Tortuguero National Park, Arenal Observatory, and Corcovado National Park to witness this spectacular array of life, making Costa Rica a true paradise for anyone passionate about birds and biodiversity.

It is home to an astonishing diversity of birds—over 900 species have been recorded, making it one of the world’s premier birdwatching destinations. Some of the most notable species are: Clay-Colored Thrush - The national bird of Costa Rica, Resplendent Quetzal , Scarlet Macaw , Keel-Billed Toucan, over 50 species of Hummingbirds and Motmots.
